Alaska Adult Education

Did you know? There have been more than 20 million high school equivalency (GED) graduates since its inception in 1942. Grads have gone on to every walk of life, including: Ambassadors, U.S. Surgeon Generals, world-famous athletes, entertainers, and entrepreneurs.

AAE Programs

Alaska Adult Education (AAE) programs provide adult learners the skills needed to prepare them for employment, vocational training, or postsecondary education.

Alaska has Regional Adult Education Programs, an Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) Program, and a comprehensive Adult Education Program housed in each of the State’s Correctional Facilities.

Adult education programs provide skills, such as:

  • General Educational Development (GED) test preparation
  • Instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and more
  • Workplace education
  • English language classes
  • Citizenship classes and test preparation
  • Distance education

  • "I thought many times I couldn’t do it and I wanted to give it up but I’m glad I decided to stick with it."
    Sonia P. - Mat-Su Regional AE Program
  • "It was not easy, but I did it. With the help of family, friends, and my teachers, I was able to get my GED diploma and now get accepted to UAA. If I can do this, everybody should give it a chance and believe in themselves."
Loc S. - Anchorage Regional AE Program
  • "I just want to tell somebody that is in my situation, just keep trying, as many times as it takes and surround yourself with people that support and believe in you. Have people that keep saying you can do it, so you just keep going, believing in yourself."
Yuliana S. - Valdez Regional AE Program
  • "I came to the US with my family about 5 years ago from South Korea, and the last time I studied and used English was when I was a college student in Japan in the early 1990’s. Now I have more confidence in my English reading skills than before and will be able to move on to the next step."
Junko M. - Kodiak Regional AE Program
